Once you are a few days into your journey making the right choice might be all that stand between your character and death. With areas containing different rewards, careful selection of where to go next can be vital. A few careful shoves can shift your direction a good amount, but you can never really fight the current, frequently forcing you to choose between destinations as the river bends and forks. The flowing water pushes and pulls your small craft everywhere, and your movement is limited by your characters stamina. Through all of this, fantastically selected music brilliantly balances The Flame in the Flood's blend of ominous and jaunty. The isometric art style makes all the characters and enemies feel like toys in a diorama world, reminiscent of animate movies like The Nightmare Before Christmas or Coraline. ![]() The game has a tough time sticking to a single point, which is why character motivations seem to appear rather abruptly, depending on the current theme or message.All of which looks and sounds beautiful. This 2D anime visual novel has many mixed themes, and it sometimes gets in the way of the narrative. These low-quality sections really stand out in contrast simply because of how well-made the other sections of the game are. The changes in art style really stand outĭue to the time and budget restraints on this indie developer, this love story game has a single art style for much of the game, but there are parts where the visual assets are of much lower quality. The game comes with a very long content warning, but the offensive elements are very mild on their own merit and even when taken as a whole through the 2-4 hour long game. ![]() It seems the writer wished to add as many themes as possible without offending too many people. The choices in the game are more about interaction choices and character dynamics. This romantic story allows you to alter your experience by giving you options as you play, but all the options eventually lead to the same ending and the same major events. ![]()
